Quality Care

A C U P U N C T U R E

Today in most western cultures, Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine is considered a "new alternative" medicine. In reality, they are practiced medical treatments that are over 5,000 years old. Very basically, Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles, sometimes in conjunction with electrical stimulus, on the body's surface, in order to influence and balance the physiological functioning of the body.  Petra and her experienced team know how to use this ancient therapy to very best effect, often in combination with nutrition and lifestyle advice and/or alongside conventional medical treatment.

Acupuncture for Fertility & Gynaecology

The aim of the acupuncturist is to create balance and harmony in the body in order to optimise health and wellbeing. When it comes to fertility and gynaecology, patients suggest that it helps reduce their pain, regulate hormones, reduce stress and improves their ovulation, just to name a few things.  We know that acupuncture, via the central nervous system, releases endorphins which are nature’s pain relieving and ‘feel good’ messengers which aid in the treatment of fertility and gynaecology.  An added benefit is that many patients report feeling calmer and more in control, which can only be a positive during what can be a very stressful time.

Men can also benefit from using acupuncture, particularly if there is male factor infertility or they have high stress levels. Many men enjoy being involved in the process and find acupuncture helps them relax.

Acupuncture and IVF

There are many different ways to achieve one goal. Both Chinese and Western medicine have accomplished great feats over the last century, and IVF is certainly one of those. A growing body of scientific research now supports the efficacy of acupuncture, in particular, as a complementary therapy for those going through IVF or other assisted fertility treatments.

Acupuncture & Chinese medicine has been shown to help improve the success rate in a number of ways:

  • Improve the function of the ovaries to produce better quality eggs

  • Regulate the hormones to produce a larger number of quality follicles

  • Increase the blood flow to the uterus and increase the thickness of the uterine lining

  • Relax the patient and decrease stress

  • Prevent the uterus from contracting

  • Lessen the side effects of the drugs used

  • Strengthen the immune system

  • Decrease the chance of miscarriage

Acupuncture and Pregnancy

Acupuncture may provide a safe and effective way of preventing, treating or alleviating the symptoms of health complaints that may be experienced during pregnancy. These include:

  • threatened miscarriage

  • nausea and vomiting

  • constipation

  • fatigue

  • sleeplessness

  • stretch marks

  • cramping & restless legs

  •  back, sciatic & other body pain

  • heartburn & reflux

  • anaemia

  • fluid retention

  • varicose veins

  • pre-eclampsia

  • high blood pressure

  • gestational diabetes

  • haemorrhoids

  • pelvic instability

  • carpal tunnel syndrome

  • birth preparation

  • breech presentation

  • premature labour

  • overdue for dates / natural induction

Acupuncture can also be used to help prepare for an uncomplicated labour and birth, hasten recovery, promote healthy lactation and enable smoother transition to parenthood.

Acupuncture and Post Partum Recovery

The difficulty of caring for a new baby often lies not so much in taking care of the child, but the patient taking care of themself. The key to patients getting through the first weeks and months is to find support wherever they can. Acupuncture can provide some assistance with emerging problems or difficulties that may be experienced including:

• recovery and healing from the birth

• breast feeding (low milk supply, cracked nipples, mastitis)

• boosting energy levels

• stress and anxiety

• weight management

• belly and skin rejuvenation.
